Commons Group - the commons

Organizations that thrive in the future will do so because they understand the power of the commons.

We see this already, especially online. The shared economy of open source is is winning out over siloed corporations. New social movements are more about networks than organizations.

As knowledge becomes our most powerful currency, these scenarios will play out again and again – both off and on line.

The Internet...

We help organizations tap into the power of the collective – online and in the real world – by finding innovative ways to inject the spirit of the commons into projects, campaigns and governance models.

Much of our work has focused on helping organizations develop strategies for collaboration – from developing NGO partnerships that cross traditional sector boundaries to designing networks of social enterprises working collectively to deliver services.

We have also done extensive work helping to develop knowledge ecosystems where information flows freely across organizational boundaries. This work has included the development of the APC Actions open source content sharing software and a content sharing network built around the healthyenvironmentforkids.ca portal.

Most importantly, we bring the idea of community as conversation to all of our work. It is conversation that provides a channel into and around the commons. It is the vehicle that helps free ideas travel.

...has a lot to teach us about how the commons works in the real world.
